Looking to move into automobile manufacturing, BMW bought the Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928 and, with it, the rights to build the Dixi car. This made the Dixi, the first car made by BMW.

BMW started manufacturing motorcycle engines for other companies in 1921. In 1923 BMW released its own motorcycle - the BMW R32, which was powered by a flat-twin engine.
